Soaring Over the Horizon

This is the ride to prioritise. It is gentle rather than thrilling — you sit in a bench that swings out in front of a giant screen — so it suits most of the family once children clear the 102 cm minimum height. There is no single rider line, which matters for planning: you cannot shortcut the standby queue by splitting your group. What you can use is Rider Switch, so adults take turns while one waits with a small child, and paid Premier Access if you want to skip the line outright.

Roaring Rapids

The 107 cm minimum height rules out smaller children, and the key thing to know is that everyone gets wet. Some seats take a proper drenching rather than a light spray, so treat this as a ride you commit to. On a hot Shanghai summer day that is exactly what you want; on a cooler day, plan for wet clothes afterwards.

Camp Discovery

Camp Discovery is not a ride at all but a walk-through exploration trail with rope-course and climbing sections wrapped around Roaring Mountain. There is no boarding queue, so it is a useful way to burn off energy — especially for older kids — between the two big attractions.

How do I stay dry on Roaring Rapids?

You do not stay fully dry — that is the point — but you can control the damage. Seal your phone, camera and anything electronic in a waterproof bag before you board; the splash zones are unpredictable and a soaked handset is the most common regret here. Either wear quick-drying clothes or bring a poncho, and consider carrying a small towel. If keeping your camera dry matters more than the ride, hand it to a non-riding member of your group instead.

Do the height limits matter for families?

They matter a lot on Adventure Isle, more than in gentler lands. Both headliners have real floors — 102 cm for Soaring Over the Horizon and 107 cm for Roaring Rapids — so a younger child may clear one ride and not the other. Camp Discovery has no boarding requirement, which makes it the fallback when someone is too small to ride. Head to Soaring Over the Horizon at rope drop or in the last hours before closing — those are the only times its wait stays short, and by mid-morning it is routinely one of the longest queues in the park. The park usually opens around 08:30 and closes around 20:30, though high-season and holiday dates run later; confirm the day’s hours before you go, as the schedule is only published roughly two weeks ahead.
